Camping Near Six Flags Great Adventure: A Local's Guide
Jul 26, 2026 · Area Guide · 2 min read
If Six Flags Great Adventure is on your family's summer list, here's a local secret: the best part of a Six Flags trip isn't the hotel afterward. It's coming back to a quiet, wooded campsite, lighting a fire, and letting the kids wind down under the pines instead of in a parking-lot lobby.
Butterfly Camping Resort sits in Jackson, New Jersey — the same town as the park. The drive from our gate to the Six Flags entrance is an easy one, usually 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic, so you can be there when the gates open and back at your site before the marshmallows come out.
Here's how our campers usually do it. Arrive the day before and get set up without rushing — check-in is relaxed, and the kids can burn off the car ride at the playground or the pool. Head to the park early the next morning (weekday mornings are noticeably lighter all summer), spend the day on the coasters and the Safari, and come home to a campfire dinner. If you have a second park day in you, Hurricane Harbor is right there too.
A few honest tips from families who make this trip every year: bring a soft cooler and eat breakfast at your site before you go — park food adds up fast. Buy park tickets online ahead of time. And plan for the kids to be wiped out on the ride back, because they will be.
Why camp instead of a hotel? Space, mostly. A full-hookup RV site here runs a fraction of a Jackson-area hotel room in peak season, and instead of one room you get a campfire, a picnic table, the pool, and a weekend full of campground activities — most summer Saturdays we have crafts, our Super Saturday Ice Cream Social, wagon rides, B.I.N.G.O in the pavilion, and more going on right here.
We have 128 RV sites (water-and-electric from $74 a night, full hookups with 30- or 50-amp service too), 6 wooded tent sites, and 8 cabins if you're not towing anything. Our season runs April 3 through October 18.
If you're planning a Six Flags trip this summer, give the office a call at 732-928-2107 and we'll help you pick a site. See you at the campfire after the coasters!
